What are symptoms of celiac disease?


Celiac disease affects 1% of the population. It primarily affects the gastrointestinal track but untreated it has a multi-organ effect. It is estimated that celiac disease affects 1 in 133 people in the U.S. It can affect all cultures.

There are typical symptoms of celiac disease and then there are silent cases of celiac disease. *Only about half of the people with celiac disease will have these symptoms.

Classic symptoms:

  • Weight loss
  • Diarrehea/Constipation
  • Adominal pain
  • Bloating
  • Nutritional deficiencies
  • Failure to thrive and short stature.

Other symptoms include:

  • Anemia
  • Bloating, gas and/or abdominal pain
  • Bones that break easily
  • Bruising
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Delayed growth
  • Dental enamel problems
  • Depression or irritability
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Discolored teeth or enamel problems
  • Dry eyes
  • Edema
  • Failure to thrive
  • Fatigue
  • Hard to flush stools
  • Inability to lose weight
  • Indigestion
  • Infertility
  • Joint pain
  • Lactose intolerance
  • Menstrual problems
  • Migraines
  • Mouth sores and ulcers (canker sores)
  • Nutritional deficiencies: iron, vitamins A,D, E, K, Calcium
  • Reflux (Heartburn)
  • Skin problems and rashes
  • Tingling or numbness in hands and feet
  • Unexplained weight loss
